Greetings people!
"Many just can't read, but many don't read" says Aditya Saxena, oh me, and that is true. Many don't have the time to read because let's face it if you are new, some books will take forever to finish! And then there are some people who complete that book in a day which adds to your sadness. Well if that's your reason for not reading, that's just wrong. Everyone reads at their own pace and the people who mock others on their reading speed ARE EVIL! Well not going off topic, this article is for that friend of yours who intervenes your reading session saying, "What the heck are you doing reading this book? I have already watched its movie."
Oh how I wanna punch Arlo in the face!
So let's begin:
What can you learn?
This is one of the main reasons to read you'll find online. I frequently see people asking their teachers about the ways to be better at English. And that teacher's response is "Read!". What is it about reading that makes it literature teacher's best friend? Firstly, the world-renowned fact - "Books are a storehouse of knowledge". When you read you learn:
-new words
-things about the author's time,,
-things about the author's place,
-to see things from a different POV (point of view)
The last point is the most important one. Stephen King says " Writing is about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well" and truly books accomplish that. So if you are a keen learner, reading is a habit you should develop and cherish.
What do researches say?
I know what you are thinking, "Do you have a proof?"
Well why yes, I do! Numerous and when I say that I mean really NUMEROUS researches have been conducted to establish reading as the best source of entertainment. Now this blog is not supposed to be a Ctrl-C-Ctrl-V post so I won't be mentioning every research with its name, person in-charge, his/her designation, important people, result, conclusion, verdict achieveme..huh...huh...I can't even say all this! So I will just summarize the important conclusions:
Reading increases:
-quality of imagination,
-focus and concentration,
-immunity to stress,
-quality of memory
Umm...half 80% paragraph went in the introduction!
The Real Reason
Yeah sure reading makes you smarter, reading improves your concentration, reading cures global warming, but I have not stated the main reason. Books are fun! See books are the best sources of entertainment and actually, the most productive entertainment. Every book has a story to tell, even non-fictions. All books are packed with experiences of people, be it fictitious people or real. And sometimes those stories are just not worth missing. It has some element that just hooks you to the story. Of course not every book is like that, but that is no excuse! The real reason people like to read is because of the story. Let grammar go to hell, let the literary devices go to hell. let the brain's development go to hell, all that matters mostly is a good story.
So that ends this article, I'd really like to know your reasons for reading and how are you going to tell me? Well you can reply on this blog with your account here or tweet @Aditya__Saxena. One thing that I hear is that books are very costly and this is something that makes sense, as a beginner, it is okay to spend $3-$5 on a book but as reading becomes a habit, it can affect you financially so what I'd recommend is keep a budget for buying books and when you cannot, there are hundreds of old books which are now public domain so you can get their electronic copies for free from websites like Project Gutenberg.Or you can join Kindle Unlimited which gives you access to a huge library of books at a small fee. My recommendations for starters are Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Oliver Twist and The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes.
Thank you for continuing till the end. Keep reading and Stay Safe!
